Sedona Starlight Portraits are a truly unique photography experience. Because our portraits are always crafted in collaboration with Nature, it's important to understand how our shoots are different from a typical portrait session. We've put together this helpful guide to the factors that will most affect your shoot, along with some examples to help you understand what to know before booking your session to ensure you create the perfect image you envision.

The Moon:

The moon is the single most impactful element when making Starlight Portraits. We have a whole blog dedicated to understanding the moon phase and its impact on the images we make, you can read it here. It helps to check the moon phase during your visit, and if you have any questions we are more than happy to help you understand your options. In short, the moon will affect how many stars are visible, and how well lit the landscape will appear.

Painted vs Natural Light:

Our portraits can be crafted using entirely natural starlight and moonlight, or they can be transformed into magical scenes through the use of light painting. Light painting is a technique where your photographer introduces light into the scene using specialized tools to create magical and ethereal shapes, designs, and patterns. These images are often the most striking and unique of all our portrait offerings, but they are also the most complex to create. For this reason, if you are particularly drawn to our Light Painting Portraits we suggest booking at least a 90 Minute Starlight Portrait package to ensure you and your photographer have enough time to perfect your images. Light Painted images are also great for nights when the conditions don't fully cooperate. Sedona Starlight Portraits endeavors to only cancel sessions for active precipitation and high winds, so on cloudy evenings we craft Light Painting Portraits when Starlight Portraits are not possible to capture. To understand more about our shoot type options, please check out our Portfolio page for a dive into the techniques we use to craft our portraits.

Location:

Sedona has some of the most amazing outdoor photography locations in America. The combination of stunning red rock monuments and world class dark skies is unmatched anywhere else on Earth. It is important to note that Sedona Starlight Portraits is NOT a guided hiking service. For this reason, it is vitally important that all guests understand that they must research and choose the shoot location on their own, and that all guests will be responsible for getting themselves to and from the shoot location safely. Your photographer will typically meet you in a parking area, and we can provide headlamps for navigating the trail upon request, but your photographer cannot assume any responsibility for you while en route to or from your shoot location. To aid in deciding on the perfect backdrop for your Starlight Portrait session, we have created this helpful blog outlining several popular shoot location requests. This is not an endorsement of these locations, and Sedona Starlight Portraits cannot guarantee that any route is safely navigable for any guest. It is provided for convenience sake and to help guests do their own research to choose a shoot location they can safely and comfortably reach.
